We are living in a world where all our information is exposed. It is very good that we realized this because until recently, we thought that we are perfectly safe.

Information breaches which happened in the last couple of years, exposing private and public data, made us realize that it is much better to stay protected than risk having your data stolen. This is one of the main reasons why VPN applications became so popular in a short amount of time.

VPN stands for virtual private network. These applications allow user to gain total control over his information. While using it, you are making sure that no one can access your data and misuse it in any way. Unlike other network providers, companies that provide VPN service/s make sure that their data cannot be accessed by third parties.

So, what is the big secret when it comes to VPNs?

After installing this application, a secure tunnel is created between you and the internet. All data coming or going from your computer is protected by it. VPN works by encrypting the data making it virtually impossible to read.

First VPNs

Although we have found out that VPNs are a great way to secure data of individual users, these providers first became popular in corporative world. By installing these applications on all computers, you are able to connect devices which are geographically separate. In other words, if your colleagues are working in a different country, you are able to join them on the same network.

Naturally, all the safety measures stay in place. With VPN, you are able to transfer data within your private network making sure that it is never endangered. If we didn’t have such providers, we would be forced to transfer data from one computer to another by using discs or USB drives. Otherwise, we couldn’t be certain whether or not this data will be hacked.

Besides business world, VPN providers quickly became crucial for students. Given that most of them are using university’s public network, they are constantly facing danger of being hacked. With VPN, they are able to create a safe connection with university servers.

VPN in modern time:

Today more than ever, VPNs are a service that has to be used. As we approach the new era, most of us will start using (if we already not using) mobile devices for accessing the Internet. Just ask yourself, how many times did you log in on a local Wi-Fi network just to access Facebook or read the recent news?

These public networks are full of security holes. By using your cell phone in public, you are allowing hackers access to all your valuable data. With VPN, this can be prevented. You will no longer have to think about your security as you safely browse the net from anywhere in the world.

With this, we come to another important function of these applications. VPN is able to change your physical location. For example, if you are using a PC from China, you won’t be able to access Google. Anyway, that shouldn’t be a problem. Instead of showing your Chinese address, you can choose to present your computer as if you are physically in US. Nevertheless, have in mind that by doing this you will not gain access to some other websites which are otherwise available to Chinese people. So, it is a trade-off of sort.

Things to look out for

There are a lot of free VPN applications out there. But, if you are really persistent in using VPN for a longer period of time, it is much better to get a paid version.

Like most other free products, free VPNs are full of pop-ups. Sometimes, your traffic and speed may be limited. In order to avoid all these issues, you can get a monthly subscription.

In most cases, use of a paid VPN costs less than 10 dollars per month. Given this price, it is a real bargain if you have in mind the benefits.

Other things that need to be taken into account are available countries, simplicity of the interface, whether or not provider keeps a log of your activity etc.

That’s it! This was my thoughts on why VPN is important. If you have any queries then feel free to ask it in the comment section below.
